D-Day memorial tour
At the beginning of our French road trip to Le Mans, we also reflected on our freedom and the price we paid for it. We visited the famous landing beaches of Omaha and Utah Beach. We also came across the enormous cemetery near Omaha Beach, a truly breathtaking sight. Endless fields of soldiers' graves, many who had already fallen during the first few days. We also saw the church in Sainte-Mère-Église, where a paratrooper ended up hanging from the church bell (also known from the film "Longest Day"). At Point du Hoc, we saw the various bomb craters and bunkers. The Allies had climbed the rock faces there with their special forces to capture the bunkers. It was an impressive day.
